Builder’s Engineering Network, LLC

Founder and President of the Builder’s Engineering Network, LLC (1994) providing engineering services to contractor/builders of residential homes. Provide uplift calculations, Shearwall Segment calculations with placement drawings, determine pressures on windows and door openings so that the appropriate tested component (meeting engineering requirements for impact resistance and cyclic or fatigue loading) is sized for the opening. Along with the calculations is provided a “second sheet” of supporting details and graphics showing the contractor how to install of build the major parts of the house to meet wind loading code requirements for their building department’s jurisdiction.

Provide laboratory evaluation/consultation and certification services for manufacturers of doors, windows and their components. (clients: Jeldwen, Pella, General Products, Eagle Window, Therma-Tru, Plast-Pro, etc.) Assist these manufacturers in either obtaining their Dade County Product Approval documentation or their Broward County Product Approval documentation or our own (BEN) approved third party certification and product approval. Certification is provided only after the Dade County protocols for product testing have be passed, including wind stress resistance in the form of cyclic or fatigue loading, water pass-through resistance, forced entry resistance and impact resistance (2x4 cannon).

Developed truss and house design software for light gage steel frame homes. Software designed using the precepts that light gage steel is lighter that wood or concrete block and connections between steel studs and track are stronger than those in wood trusses, (ie. steel nail plates and steel connectors and strapping are used to reinforce tradition nailing in high wind areas). Constructed/designed two steel homes in Okeechobee, two in Mt Dora, one in Seminole County, one in Lake County. Designer/manufacturer of the mobile truss/wall fabrication facility for on-site construction of light gage steel affordable homes.

Developed software for code compliance to assist in the design of houses such as: Uplift determination software providing engineering calculations to size connectors for holding down trusses and walls. Shear Wall Segments load determination for walls in any configuration of house. This also includes testing of proprietary design of an in the wall shear wall segment for both wood frame and steel frame homes. Designed software making the design of stairs easier for contractors while ensuring code compliance. Designed and produced software to determine the positive and negative design pressures on door and windows for code compliance. This software also contains calculations for anchoring systems so that the doors and windows not only meet code but that the installation also meets code. (By meeting code I mean the Standard Building Code Congress International out of Birmingham, Alabama and/or the SBC as adopted by the statute for the state of Florida.
